Its most prominent landmark is when the Brazos River Dam was built in 1969 which formed Lake Granbury. This is a long, narrow lake that flows through the center of the city.

Granbury and Hood County are rich in Texas history. Davy Crockett's wife Elizabeth settled in this county in 1853 following the Texas Revolution against Mexico. Davy Crockett received 640 acres in land grants, which is now Hood County. She's currently buried at the Acton State historic site, the smallest state park in the state of Texas. A large statue of Elizabeth Crockett marks her gravesite and several of Crockett's descendants still reside in the county. Legend has it that John Wilkes Booth moved to Hood County and assume the name of John St. Helen after which a store on the historic town square is named.

Granbury has been voted in USA Today's Best Historic Small Town in America rich in culture, Texas history, and Southern hospitality. With the historic downtown square featuring shops, restaurants, markets, and summer festivals and street fairs, Granbury is not only a wonderful place to live but to visit and play.

Granbury Schools

The Granbury Independent School District is the public school district based in Granbury. The district serves the Eastern Hood County cities of DeCordova, Cresson, and Brazos Bend along with several unincorporated communities such as Pecan Plantation and Oak Trail Shores. Smaller portions of other counties such as Parker, Johnson, and Somervell also are part of the district and it's been recognized and rated as one of the best by the Texas education agency.

The district hosts one high school, the Stars Accelerated high school, two middle schools, the intermediate school for grades 3-5, and 4 elementary schools as well as a pre-k through second-grade elementary school. There's also the behavior transition center for all grades as well.
