If you were up and out early enough you may just spot the small crew of workers just before 6:30 AM getting ready for the park’s daily cleanup. Not too long ago it took a full five trailer loads of waterlogged branches and giant tree trunks hauled away in early June for the park to be completely clean and safe and ready for use. The heavy rains of spring brought loads of debris as flood water came into Lake Granbury fed by the Brazos River. Heavy debris also occurs in Lake Granbury when Possum Kingdom Lake Dam opens its gates and increases its water flow. The crew definitely has a larger cleanup job and brings out heavier equipment and more help after there has been significant weather, especially after heavy rain.

Regardless of previous weather or heavy rains, there is always some amount of debris to clean up and the crew of workers are there every morning diligently cleaning up making sure that the park is looking its best and ready to go for the day. Mainly crews are looking for logs that could be dangerous to swimmers if they are submerged under the water. The beach could quickly look like a large log jam if daily cleaning and maintenance were not performed every morning.

In addition to picking up anything that could be hazardous for swimmers in the water and right along the shore the beach gets raked and the area’s amenities are cleaned up and taken care of as well. Some mornings it takes hours to accomplish the public beach cleanup at Lake Granbury and some mornings it takes just about an hour with more than one person helping out. And once the shores of the beach are clean and looking great and ready for use the cleanup crew makes its way across the street to the public boat launch to ensure that it is safe as well.

It may not seem like the most glamorous and often recognized of jobs around Granbury, but the crew that is here every morning takes pride in their job and in serving the city of Granbury to keep the public beach in its best shape and best usefulness. The care that the city and the cleanup crew take in making sure that the public access to Lake Granbury through the beach and the boat launch are enjoyable to use and safe is just one of the many testaments to the fact that Granbury is such a great place to live.
